What's the difference between soil and dirt?
Soil is the layer of minerals, organic matter, water, air and living organisms that sits undisturbed in the ground, while dirt is soil that has been dug up or moved. The curator of the Smithsonian's soils exhibit put it as "dirt is displaced soil." Construction fill dirt is mostly subsoil with little organic matter.
